Respiratory Sleep Level 2

The apprenticeship scheme has taught elements that are split between core units where you will join other L2 Apprenticeship learners from a variety of pathways, this often generates lively debate within class as many share best practice amongst the remote online classroom. In total there are six core units that cover the fundamental topics you would naturally expect on an apprenticeship course based within healthcare science, some of the topics covered include:  

• Health and Safety  
• Principles of Patient Care 
• Quality, Audit and Innovation  

The Respiratory Sleep pathway will give learners a broader understanding of respiratory and sleep methodologies, covering the basic theory and execution of spirometry, reversibility, pulse oximetry and sleep diagnostics. Learner will also gain an understanding of the underlying anatomy, physiology and pathology of the respiratory system as well as respiratory and sleep disease.   

The Level 2 programme is an entry-level of qualification designed to build your confidence in the skills for your role and provide a foundation in academic learning.  

Learners may be eligible to apply for higher-level roles within their current career path or use their nationally recognised qualification to explore other avenues within healthcare. 

Learners may also wish to progress on to one our L4 Healthcare Science apprenticeships.

Sleep‑related breathing disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), affect millions of people in the UK and are increasingly recognised as a major public health concern. Untreated sleep disorders are linked to serious long‑term health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, and increased risk of road traffic accidents. As awareness and diagnosis increase, demand for sleep services continues to grow rapidly. 

The importance of respiratory sleep services in healthcare has never been clearer. Respiratory sleep support workers and assistant practitioners play a vital role in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of sleep‑related breathing disorders. They support patient set‑up for sleep studies, ensure accurate data collection, maintain specialist equipment, and provide essential patient education to promote effective treatment and long‑term adherence. 

A Level 2 Respiratory Sleep Apprenticeship provides a critical entry route into this specialist workforce. It equips learners with the core skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to safely support respiratory and sleep diagnostics, infection control, equipment preparation, and patient care. By strengthening the workforce at this level, the pathway supports earlier diagnosis, improves patient outcomes, enhances service capacity, and helps reduce the long‑term healthcare and societal costs associated with untreated sleep and respiratory disorders. 

Investing in respiratory sleep apprenticeships is an investment in safer patients, healthier communities, and a more sustainable healthcare system.

We operate a remote teaching format where core lessons are delivered once a month, followed by a 4-week period to complete the relevant assignments.  

Learners will build an ongoing portfolio of evidence throughout the duration of the course and are expected to showcase their practical competencies via remote assessment.   

Witness testimonies from peers will ascertain how the learner meets the behaviours expected of an apprentice and continued professional development from within the department logged as off the job training. 

Although your employer may offer time to complete assignments during your working week, you should expect to spend some of your own time completing your work.

• Prepare patients for tests, explain procedures, and provide caring and encouraging guidance and support. 
• Performing spirometry and reversibility testing 
• Calibrate and prepare diagnostic equipment. 
• Set up patients with overnight sleep study devices and download data on its return
